We know there is thousands of themes available for wordpress, but how do you go about changing your theme, you will suprised the amount of people that don’t know how to add a theme, it may well be simple but for those who don’t know how just read the following and you will be an expert in this one thing at least.

What do you need for adding a theme.

A Template

These can be found everywhere and a few places to check are

Wordpress.net

Free WP Themes

ThemeSpot

ThemePorter

An FTP Programme

This is a bit of software that can be used to transfer your files to your webserver

CuteFTP

Brandyware FTP

SmartFTP

The Process

As I have mentioned before you should have a seperate folder for everything you do with your blog.

Simply download the Theme and unzip it to a folder on your desktop. Ive created a folder called ‘MattNutts’ everything I will use for this site will be kept in that folder so its easy to get to and I know where everything is.

But you can expand on this as we dig deeper into customizing your blog, create another folder inside the one you just created and call it Themes

Now you have unzipped the files you need to upload them to your server, I use CUuteFTP myself but the way it is done should be the same.

1

Start the FTP programme and in the local files area browse to your folder where you unzipped the files to.

2

Connect to your server using the FTP programme, they will most likely want to know the web address, host, username and password.

3

You need to upload the files to /wp-content/themess if you have installed wordpress into a subfolder other than the Site Root (the first area your ftp will find) you will need to browse to it, it could be something like - wordpress/wp-content/themes. The easiest way to tell if you are using a subfolder is to browse to your wordpress homepage for mine I just type in http://mattnutts.com yours could be the same but your site name or it could have extras after it like .com/wordpress or .com/myblog

4

From your localhost folder (the folder on your computer) drag and drop the whole theme folder into the themes folder on the server. So if you unzipped a folder called ‘cowtheme’ drag the whole folder and not just the parts inside the folder.

5

Once you have uploaded the folder, goto your admin panel within wordpress on your site and click Presentation.

6

You will see some thumbnail images of the themes you have uploaded to choose a theme all you do is click on the thumbnail

7

Now if you check your site you will see your theme has changed.
