Blog Diseases and a Healthy Lifestyle

Healthy Lifestyle and blogging don’t normally go together, but I shall go through a few blog diseases and see if you can pick out if your blog is getting what it needs to be healthy and have a healthy lifestyle.

Blog is Prone to Slowness

The Problem

My blog is slow and sometimes takes a few minutes to load, at other times it can be faster but every now and then it takes a dive.

The Diagnosis

To me it sounds like Widgetitus. What do I mean by this.. Well you have loaded your blog with widgets and gadgets. In fact anything you have found that you think is cool you have added to your blogs sidebar, posts, header, footer and any other whitespace you have.

Treatment

The treatment is easy. Remove the dam things. No need to tell everybody where your traffic is coming from, or the fact your blog is ranked number 500 in a blog directory that no-one visits.
Analyze your widgets. Do you really need them, do they provide anything of value, did you add it just because it looks ‘cool’.

My Blog Is Looks Empty

My blog is empty and looks a bit bare.

Diagnosis

Regulas Posteritus - Simple diagnosis and one you should watch out for. Readers are like sheep they get in a set routine, visiting times, time of day of visit etc. But they wont if your blog has no content. Regulas Posteritus is when you don’t post regularly. You can go a week even 3 weeks between posts and don;t update at regular times.

Treatment

Easy one this, post regularly, set a day of the week or 3 days of the week that you will add new content. Your readers will get used to these days and often come back just to see what you have added that day. If you are going to take a break and not post for a while announce it. Let readers know you wont update until such and such a date.

My Blog Was Fine Until Someone Dugg My Post

Diagnosis

Hmmm with the little information that you have given me I can only think of one disease that may have caused this. Diggitious Loadem. This is when your post hits the front page of digg or another popular bookmarking site and ends up not being able to load due to the traffic you are receiving.

Treatment

Quite easy this one. You should always be prepared for a post going super sonic on a major bookmarking site. Prepare in advance.

What mirror sites you will use to display the post.
Make sure you have Super Cache or some other programme running on your blog.
Take note of any posts that get dugg and monitor them.

Use that. It can handle upward of 10k requests an hour on a decent server. It caches everything so there is no php processing and no sql requests unless the page actually changes.

I tried it yesterday and it just caused me problems, I may try it again when I get some more time.

It’s a little tricky to get working. Root level access is required to make your caching and content directories writable. Shoot me an email if you get stuck again and maybe I can help, I’ve got it installed on 3 high traffic blogs.

Thanks for the offer, Im sure I will be able to get it done, I only had a quick try. Just got a few directories, blogs and sites to keep upto date at the mo, but if I get stuck I know where to head :)

This is very good! I submitted it to digg. I think it will be a popular post.

Glad to see you don’t suffer from my blog’s illness… fidgettinkeritius. I just can’t leave well enough alone and am always fidgeting and tinkering with everything!

I may add that one to the next round if you don’t mind Will
