Its that time of the year again where everyone joins together across the blogs of the world, to spread the word on a good cause and to try and madke a difference.
This year is no different and is on the subject of ‘Acts of Kindness’. Blogcatalog have run these sort of things every now and then, and have helped people across the world in the past. So please join them and have a look at their mini site for this and think about helping and making your own post.
What is an act of kindness, it can be anything from walking an elderly person across a road to doing something for someone who can’t do it for themselves.
Its not hard to do an act of kindness and I will list a few examples below.
Check on your elderly neighbours - This time of year can be lonely for some or to cold to go out. Check on your elderly neighbours and offer them some help, it can be to do their shopping or make them a cup of tea. It doesn’t have to stop there, this can be done throughout the year. We all know someone who we see everyday and may struggle with the day to day jobs that we find easy.
Use your manners - From opening a door to someone with a pushchair to letting someone else sit down on the bus. Its just to easy to make a difference, don’t just walk through a door check behind you to see if someone else is coming.
Help someone with their shopping - How many times have you walked down the street and seen someone elderly or a young mum struggling with lots of bags, when you could of easily just offered to help.
Give a little - I know we can all get fed up with seeing the homeless, but this time of year must be awful for them, its colder and coming upto Christmas. I watched a programme a while back where some rich folk were taken to the streets of London and made to sleep on the streets for a week or 2 to see how the otherside lived. A lot of the homeless have no choice in the matter, be it through divorce or abuse. So drop a pound in their pots or hats, reward the folks playing guitars on street corners. A hot cup of coffee could save their life.
A few quotes from some blogger friends have really made me think and I would like to share them with you.
A beautiful quote van Leo Buscaglia:
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.
I used this quote on my blog, accompanied by a beautiful video on an Act of Kindness:
“All of the Bloggers Unite events and the other similar events they’ve inspired in the larger blogging community have been great opportunities for bloggers around the world to turn a small investment of time and effort into big results. Join the effort. Tell your friends. Make a difference.”
“Bloggers are very kind souls with hearts of gold. We care about others and on December 17th, we will blog to help and show a kindness to those in need. Come join and support this unique call to unite and help others in need.”
I’m not sure this is what you mean, but I’ve always liked this one from “The Wizard Of Oz”. The Wizard is presenting the Tin Woodman with his heart. He notes. “Remember, my sentimental friend, that a heart is not measured by how much we love, but by how much we are loved by others”. I suspect the people we remember are the ones with the largest hearts.
“A single act of kindness or doing the right thing, whether great or small, always takes less effort and produces greater results than struggling to be right as some people often do. Bloggers Unite is an opportunity to do something good for others and then share how such compassion is effortless. It’s about that simple.”
As you can see its easily done and doesn’t take a lot of time, so spend 5 minutes helping someone or help them live out their lives with a friend rather than alone.
Gmoney had a list of things you could do as well.
I quote
Open the door for everyone you see
-Start a fund raiser today and donate the money on Dec 16th
-Wake up and call a friend and tell them how much they mean to you
-Take your kids to a retirement community and have your kids share there zest for life with someone that is older
-Write a post on how you plan to change one thing in your neighborhood
-Organize a group to talk about making a change
-Donate 5.00 to some cause
-Find a person that you never see smile and talk to them.
-Write a letter to the troops in Iraq
-Send a care package to the troops in Iraq
-Become a Big Brother or Big Sister
-Volunteer at your child’s school
-Blog about the happiness you try to bring to others lives
-Bake cookies for your coworkers
-Do a selfless act
-Volunteer at a homeless shelter
-Get to know someone of a different race
-Promise to make a positive difference in some way shape or form
-Pay it forward
………. I know some of these sound cheesy, but maybe they will get you thinking……. just try something, something outrageous, something fun, something that will change a life. Do good for the sake of doing good. Thank you BC for uniting people to do common good!

It’s the simple things that make BIG differences.
Great ideas.

Some of the quotes above got me thinking about a couple of lines from the movie “Harvey.”
Jimmy Stewart’s character, the eccentric Elwood, says: “In this world, you must be oh-so smart, or oh-so pleasant. Well, for years, I was smart. I recommend pleasant.”

Ordinary people doing extraordinary things means that we can change the world in which we live. I believe this. Being nice matters.

It doesn’t require a gazillion dollars to have the ability to be kind, that’s for sure. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

I think you really would have liked our week of giving feature at our blog. It ended up with me and my best friend making 2500 cookies or something
