Blog traffic isn’t a science, it isn’t even an art. You see so many sites saying do this or do that. Now I have done an experiment since Christmas, I have only written one post about blogging since December and a couple of odds and ends that don’t add up to a post altogether.
In other words I haven’t been adding quality content or posting on a regular basis. I wanted to see what this would do to my traffic. Would it drop like a stone or would it stay as it is.
At the time I stopped I was getting between 400 and 2000 visits a day. But what has it been like since then. Well since then I have still had between 180 and 3500 visits. How come you ask? Where does it come from?
The average seems to be around 287 visits a day mostly made up of visitors from google entrecard and blogcatalog.
Let me break down what I have done in the past to make it so I have a constant stream of visitors even if I don’t post. The benefit to me is that I don’t have to worry about posting everyday to keep my stats ticking over. If I want a break from blogging for a week I can do and still see my readers coming to see me even after a break.
Don’t get me wrong, this will not please my regular visitors if they don’t see their regular posts. But they know me, they know what to expect . This may not work for you. But if your regular readers have subscribed to your feed and you mention you are going away there is no need to worry. You will just have a new bunch of readers by the time you get back.
Some of my methods include
- Making a name for myself
- Track-backs to pages that everyone reads but no-one comments on
- Getting into something before anyone else does
Making A Name For Yourself
What do I mean by this?
For starters set out a goal, a lot of blogs go on about being active in lots of social networks and on lots of forums. But I say concentrate on one and the rest will follow. This makes it easier because by the time you go to be more active on other networks you all ready have a network of friends.
One thing you must do is use the same avatar wherever you go. I started to use one at blogcatalog and have used the same one ever since.
Now if users check other networks and see my username or my image they normally add me as they have seen me about blogcatalog.
At the end of the day this creates about 50 visits a day from various networks. Despite the fact I only use one constantly.
Track-Backs and Getting There First
I get trackbacks and visits from a lot of places around the internet and it all comes from getting in there first.
Puzzled? No need to be as if you follow the following simple rules you will get trackbacks and visits from places that everyone sees.
You will have to wait for part 2 to read anymore

Very good post, I have noticed you around the blogging scene ever since I started.
Being a known blogger takes some time but I do recognize experience when I read it! I recognize the experience of well-known names, and yours is hard to miss
(especially on BlogCatalog)
Can’t wait for the next part!

Awesome blog post. I’m going to subscribe so I can keep reading. I useally get about 20=40 views a day and I have been blogging for six months on this blog I have. My highest views in a day are 172 so its really good to see that even thought I started small it has increased and its even nicer to see that you get such great numbers and eventually I may also.
Good luck with your future blogging ~ Jeremy Newton

I just entered the blogging scene about three months ago. Looks like I’m doing one thing right and that’s using the same avatar and name everywhere I go. I have been regularly posting on 3-4 forums in addition to other social networks. My hope is to be able to brand myself this way. I look forward to your other tips!

Man!! That does seem like a bit of work. My traffic has been growing slowly but it is nowhere near what you are getting. Hopefully I will get there someday soon. I will try and put a few of your tips and tricks into place and see what happens.

This is another well done post! One of the things I have really noticed about traffic is that not all is equal. I have had a couple of posts get slammed by stumble upon. The thing is that even with a thousand or more visits from stumble users on one post, almost none visit other pages or leave comments. Digg users tend to stay longer and be more apt to comment, maybe 3 or 4% comment compared to less that 1/10 or 1% with stumble. Visitors who find one of my posts directly from a link on another website or blog are much more apt to visit several pages and comment. Probably 20% of those comment on their first visit and probably 50% return at another time.
