We shall cover the following, to make it easier I have added anchor links so you just need to click on a subject that you want details on and you will jump to that part of the post.

Signing Up
First thing you need to do is signup to blogcatalog and add the few details they ask for.
For a visual guide to signing up to blogcatlog with a few hints for usernames and tags click the following thumbnail.
Also added the video to youtube though the quality is a bit poor.
Username - The username must be unique and if possible the same name that you use for other places like digg or stumbleupon. You will see why later.Password - Password must be a mix of letters and numbers, lowercase and uppercase. Don’t use the same password for every site you use.Email Address - Try to signup to one of the free email address providers like AOL or Hotmail or even better sign up to google for a GMail account. This is so if you do become popular you wont get a lot of broadcasts, shoutouts, friend requests etc in your main email account.
Blog Title -Add your blog title and try to keep some of the keywords for your blog within the title. MattNutts before it changed used to be MattNutts SEO and Blogging. Then add your blogs URL and double check that it is right. Add your blog Country and the Blogs main language (easy those 2).
Primary Category - The primary Category is the main category that your blog will be listed under in the directory. Please take care with this and think about it for a little bit. If your not sure ask some friends or check your blog to see what you mainly write about. Secondary Category is the second place that your blog will be listed under. Think about this as well as it becomes important if someone spots your blog in the directory, visits it and finds that it is not what it was listed under. MattNutts used to be listed under General Blogging and General Internet.
Tags - Tags are important and will decide on your blog doing well within search results on Blogcatalog or bombing and never being seen. Do take your time over these. MattNutts used to be based on blogging and blogs. So try to include any keywords you used in your blog title abov. The rest of them should be something to do with your blog but isn’t over searched for. Like say you have a clothing blog keywords should be something like clothes, clothing, male clothing, female clothing, then add the rare ones clothes for adults, going out outfits etc.
Blog Description -Another important one as it shows on your blogs profile page and could be the key to taking readers away from Blogcatalog and onto your blog. Try to give a good description and outline what you do on your blog and what your aims are. Give a little piece about why someone should read your blog and why they will be coming back again and again. Again use the Keywords that your had from your title and tags.
Notice that the way you have done the Title, Tags and Description is a basis for theway you should write your posts. Always have keywords in the title, within your post and within the tags at the end.
Edit Your Profile
Editing your profile can help you gain a few fans in other social networks other than just blogcatalog. In fact this goes back to my MattNutts Traffic Post Part 1 , when you start blogging you don’t need to be active in every social network to get exposure. I am only active on Blogcatalog yet I get hits from the other networks I use because I use the same Username, Avatar and I add my details to Blogcatalogs communities area.
To start editing your profile, login and then click on your username in the top right.

Here you will find your basic layout as everyone else sees it. You will see in the main area Your description (that you entered when you signed up) Your Blogs, Your Communities, Your Friends, Recent Viewers, Groups, Neighbourhood BlogPosts, and Neighbours. On the right you will see some options that we will use now and later in the post. For a start click on your Edit Your Profile as shown in the image.

You will arrive at another screen that you can use to change all the basic information that is used by blogcatalog. Most of this you filled out when you signed u, but its a good chance to see if you missed anything. Some extras you can add are your gender, date of birth, state/county and town/city/village.
The most important extra you can add here is your avatar. Be careful with your choice as once you have chosen one you should use it throughout your blogging career, you should also use it on every social network/forum you use. An avatar can become as well known as a username.
The avatar needs to be 50×50 pixels and in the gif/jpg format. Don’t worry if your avatar is biffer as it will be resized or you could use MyPictr to resize it easily.
Once you have added anything extra you want to add click the update button.
Big part of Blogcatalog and also a place where I feel you can get some recognition.
Currently the listed networks/communities are. (You can click any of them from here to instantly add your username to your blogcatalog communities page).
It is to your benefit to get yourself a username onto quite a few if not all of these services. As I mentioned before it helps you get known around the other networks without having to use them until you want to.
You can visit the sites listed below by clicking on the images I have added of the sites front page.
Personally I think that there is quite a few more to add to the list but I am sure they will come soon. The main one I would like to see is Blogsrecord as that is my blog directory and growing fast. Of course with blogcatalogs help it would grow a lot faster :).
So go through the list and spend some time adding yourself to the sites. Then add your username to your blogcatalog communities area. You don’t have to do all of them now, spread it out over a week or so. But the main thing is to try to use the SAME username and avatar on the sites.
Instant messaging service, providing you with an instant messaging service for contacting friends and family. If your a member of aol though try not to use your email username as you could end up getting some spam into your email box. Just your username is need for this one.
With Earth’s Biggest Selection, Amazon.com has everything you could possibly ask for–so ask for it! It’s easy to create a list of what you’re hoping for: as you shop, click the “Add to Wish List” button on the page of any item that strikes your fancy. Make the list publicly searchable (or easily send it to friends and family) and presto–you’re simple to shop for.For this one you need the email address that you used to sign up to the service.
Connect with people with similar interests.
When you join a community, you are fed with an ever-updating list of blogs and blog posts submitted and chosen by like-minded individuals. Blogs are approved into a community by a community manager and their posts are pulled in automatically. Community members ‘bump’ the great posts so you can read everything as well as see what others think are the best ones.
If you have a blog, you can tap into a group of people who will visit your blog every day, or at least every time you post. You get great visibility on BUMPzee because the communities are small and focused.

Flickr - almost certainly the best online photo management and sharing application in the world - has two main goals:
1. We want to help people make their photos available to the people who matter to them.
Maybe they want to keep a blog of moments captured on their cameraphone, or maybe they want to show off their best pictures to the whole world in a bid for web celebrity. Or maybe they want to securely and privately share photos of their kids with their family across the country. Flickr makes all these things possible and more!
To do this, we want to get photos into and out of the system in as many ways as we can: from the web, from mobile devices, from the users’ home computers and from whatever software they are using to manage their photos. And we want to be able to push them out in as many ways as possible: on the Flickr website, in RSS feeds, by email, by posting to outside blogs or ways we haven’t thought of yet. What else are we going to use those smart refrigerators for?
Flickr is the WD-40 that makes it easy to get photos from one person to another in whatever way they want.
2. We want to enable new ways of organizing photos.
Once you make the switch to digital, it is all too easy to get overwhelmed with the sheer number of photos you take with that itchy trigger finger. Albums, the principal way people go about organizing photos today, are great — until you get to 20 or 30 or 50 of them. They worked in the days of getting rolls of film developed, but the “album” metaphor is in desperate need of a Florida condo and full retirement.
Part of the solution is to make the process of organizing photos collaborative. In Flickr, you can give your friends, family, and other contacts permission to organize your photos - not just to add comments, but also notes and tags. People like to ooh and ahh, laugh and cry, make wisecracks when sharing photos. Why not give them the ability to do this when they look at them over the internet? And as all this info accretes around the photos as metadata, you can find them so much easier later on, since all this info is also searchable.

Folks who use blogs know that they can accomplish similar things to Furl using blogging tools (especially with some customization). But just because something is possible, that doesn’t make it the right solution to the problem. Blogs are an amazing breakthrough for personal, digital publishing. If you have something original/insightful to say, blogs are your voice. On the flip side, Furl is focused on the consumption of digital media (including blogs). Many of us read hundreds of articles and other items online that influence our thinking (or are just amusing). Furl is our memory. Although Furl has some features that overlap with blogging tools, blogs and Furl approach Internet content in a fundamentally different way. Blogs focus on the content you create (which often contains links) while Furl focuses on the content you consume (i.e. what the links point to). This is why Furl offers powerful features such as archiving and full-text search, which apply to the linked page but don’t make as much sense in the blog space.
We believe that serious bloggers will be some of the biggest users of Furl. If you consume a lot of information through the Internet (as most bloggers do), you need a way to “remember” (i.e. save and recall) what you read, especially the most influential items. If you publish content in a blog, you already understand the power of sharing your thoughts with the public. Furl provides a turnkey solution to both of these needs, allowing bloggers to focus on publishing new content while saving and sharing their “latest reading” with their community at large.

At Ma.gnolia, members save websites as bookmarks, just like in their browser. Except with a twist: they also “tag” them, assigning labels that make them easy to find again. So when you search for something, you use words that people choose and look only at websites that people think are worth saving. Suddenly you have access to a human-organized bookmark collection that numbers in the millions, but is as easy to use as a search engine.

Currently tracking 112.8 million blogs and over 250 million pieces of tagged social media.
Technorati is the recognized authority on what’s happening on the World Live Web, right now. The Live Web is the dynamic and always-updating portion of the Web. We search, surface, and organize blogs and the other forms of independent, user-generated content (photos, videos, voting, etc.) increasingly referred to as “citizen media.”
But it all started with blogs. A blog, or weblog, is a regularly updated journal published on the web. Some blogs are intended for a small audience; others vie for readership with national newspapers. Blogs are influential, personal, or both, and they reflect as many topics and opinions as there are people writing them.
Blogs are powerful because they allow millions of people to easily publish and share their ideas, and millions more to read and respond. They engage the writer and reader in an open conversation, and are shifting the Internet paradigm as we know it.
On the World Live Web, bloggers frequently link to and comment on other blogs, creating the type of immediate connection one would have in a conversation. Technorati tracks these links, and thus the relative relevance of blogs, photos, videos etc. We rapidly index tens of thousands of updates every hour, and so we monitor these live communities and the conversations they foster.

An important one if you want to block anybody. You find people you don’t get on with everywhere from online to offline. The good thing is that online you can usually mute them so that you don’t notice them.
I have never had to block anyone myself as just ignoring them seems to work. But every now and then someone comes along who just abuses a certain person or makes their online activity in a certain website a nightmare. Thats why on blogcatalog you can block these people and just never hear from them again on there. Blocking them will only block them from your friends list, shoutbox and on your blog widget.
All you do is add their username to the box and click block.
This one gets a lot of airplay on Blogcatalog amongst those who say they get alot of spam in their email box. You can do what I mentioned above and get a seperate email address for Blogcatalog or you can just set your preferences in here.
The settings you can change are written below. Personally Ikeep them all on it does me no harm but you can see at a glance what is happening with shoutouts , groups and neighbourhoods by going to those areas on Blogcatalog.
I see alot mentioning about the amount of broadcasts some people do, but in the end that is there way of marketing whatever they want. Except for the ones with all the affiliate schemes, advertising crap and everypost they do. But if you find one like that just block them.
The Dashboard
A new feature and a welcome one. My only negative about it is that I would prefer to see it public. This would encourage users to use other networks and show your username in a few more places.
What is so good about the dashboard is that you can see everything that you want to see in one area and on one page (besides the tabs)

As you can see you can see whatever your friends are doing but only upto 30 of them. This is where I feel it should be public. Only the view of what your 30 friends are doing. But the main dashboard page shows everything your doing around all the social networks (the ones you added to your profile).
If you get to appear on a few others dashboard the chances are you will get noticed and could get more traffic to your blog or to something you stumbled.
The main screen tabs for the dashboard are
- News Feed - Everything your chosen friends are doing
- Discussions - Discussions you have recently been in
- Groups - Discussions from the groups you have joined/created
- Broadcasts - From your friends (ones you added to your friends)
- Neighbourhoods - Latest posts from any blogs you have added as favourites
To change your subscriptions (which friends info you see on the News feed page of the dashboard) just click Manage Subscriptions on the right sidebar. Here you can put a tick in the box of which ever friend you want to ‘follow’, remember you can choose upto 30.

Other settings in here can be found in the tabs.
Settings and Privacy.
This is where you can set what you see from your friends and what you show in their dashboard.

Quite a list and makes it easier to manage what you want to show and see. The communities will be different for you depending on how many you add to your profile.
You can also view you own feed that others will see. Its quite an interesting read if you get 5 minutes to view your own.
That is just a few pages of my ebook on using blogcatalog and other social networks to gain masses of blog traffic. The ebook will be available soon. So please check back and grab your copy.

Hello Chris,
Judging by the material here, the videos and tutorials this is a high value product. I don’t know if you have any audio interviews…but that also adds perceived value. Anyway… I think you could probably ask anywhere from $47 to $97 for the finished book.
This is something you would test…Believe it or not sometimes your product will sell better at the higher price than the cheap one. I assume this is a product of the price reflecting the quality of the material in the buyer”s mind. If it is a low price, they think…Well how good is it really if it’s only $7, $17, or $27??
We’d love to see the finished book.
