Starting Out

What You need To Start

Forgotten to Add tags to Your Posts?

Got Posts that are not in categories?

Got some ads you want to add to posts but don’t want to alter the template?

Want to optimize your Auctionads?

Want to add Rotating ad banners to every post without altering the code?

Then read on this may seem a little over the top for some people but using the following plugins and a bit of testing I have found I can add tags, ads, change post categories, remove tags, alter tags, all without altering any template files.

You will need the following Plugins.

Mighty Adsense

Simple Tagging

Batch Categories

and of couse you will have to join Auction Ads, by the way in the last part I will show you how you can import other ads from other networks you are in to display using Mighty adsense and Rotation.

Please remember for those who feel they can not do this, there should be no need to alter any templates or even go near them.

Getting Ready

You will need to start by downloading Batch Categories and activating it.

Once installed goto Manage, then to Batch Categories.

You will see this screen.

Batch Categories

You can see from the options that it might be puzzling to someone who has not used it before, to find any posts that are not in categories use the Percent (%) sign in the following box.

keyword

This may take some time depending on how many posts you have, at the time of writing I had 4272 posts and it took about a minute to load, you may get a notice about the script taking time just click yes to continue the script.

I found this showed every post if it was in a categorie or not, if you don’t find any posts that are not in categories then well done your better than me and you can skip the next step.

For those like me who found some ones that had excaped for some reason or not follow the next step to alter them into categories.

View

You will see that the above image shows that my post with id 1228 does not have a categorie to go in, this must have been an oversite on my part ;) now I need to add that post to a categorie of my choosing, to do that I put a tick tn the check box next to it and then select a category for it to go in.

Select Category

Finally click add selected posts to add it to that categorie, you don’t have to do this with just one post at a time if you are wondering you can sroll down the posts and see what needs adding where.

You will only have to do this until all your posts are added to categories.

You can use the above steps to add/alter which categories each post is in, they don’t just need one categorie.

The next step is adding tags but first you will need to install the Simple Tags plugin

Simple Tagging

Download and Install Simple Tags

You can follow their instructions for setting it up if you find it easier.

The options I have enabled for this are found in the tags options which you find by clicking Tags on your admin navbar, the ones enabled are Index with Technorati and include the meta tags in the header.

If you need any specific help or would like a specific post on setting up simple tags let me know. But I don’t display the tags so setting up a template isnt needed even though I can do if I wish and could help you if you needed the help.

You can now add tags and they will appear in the simple tags area as well.

Adding Tags

Now we can cover adding tags to the posts, for the following section I am going to use my ‘Q’ category as an example.

To select this category I use the dropdown box under ‘Category’ to select the one I want.

You can see from the image that all I have as Tags are ‘music videos, music video,q (category name), and the band name Queen’

I want to break it down a little so its not such a wide keyword as ‘queen’ if I add the tag ‘queen albums’ it will make the search from search engines or auctionads much smaller.

To do this I write ‘queen albums’ in the Tags box, to select what posts I want the tag adding to I use the Toggle Selection button this selects all of the posts. You can of course select which ones you want tagging individually if you want by checking the tick boxes next to each post.

Now I have written what tag I want adding and selected which posts I want tagging I click on ‘Add These Tags’

Once it refreshes you will see that the tag has been added to the posts. Some times it refreshes and says ‘No posts matches your selection’ or something like that. But don’t worry select the category again and you will see they have been added.

If you notice I have a mistake in the tags as ‘Queens of the Sone Age’ are tagged with ‘queen and queens albums’

To remove these tags I write ‘queen, queen albums’ in the tags box, select the right post and instead of choosing ‘Add these Tags’ choose ‘Remove these Tags’

As you can see below they have been removed.

Now I need to add multiple tags ‘queens of stone age, queens of stone age albums’ to the post, to do this I follow what we did before for adding a single tag but this time add another tag at the end of the first tag with a comma inbetween them. I then select the post and click ‘Add these Tags’

You can use the above steps to alter all the tags in your site with whatever you choose, Simple Tags will pick up on these tags.

For the next part we will cover using Mighty adsense to display adverts.
