I have often wondered about hitting the digg frontpage or getting stumbled until my site goes down, but how many diggs or stumbles would you need to take down a website. I suppose it depends on your server and configuration, Im with godaddy so I have no idea really what software and hardware they are using. I have also noticed if you hit the frontpage you are more than likely going to get a steady stream of traffic for quite a while that you can work with, just look at the toilet man JohnChow all he did was mention a Hitech toilet and the rest is history.
